Papercraft

      I've been looking at various examples of Papercraft, and its pretty amazing to see what people are doing with such a basic material.  I've had a really difficult time selecting one specific approach, but the one I'm most drawn to is Joel Cooper who creates really amazing origami masks.       I can find plenty of pictures, but the little information I have found doesn't really go into his philosophy, if he has one, or intent, other than to create something beautiful, in a new way, and to incorporate different glazes and varnishes to vary the effect. I can't find a photo of him...his Flickr page says, "I fold paper"and "occasionally I update my blog".(haha)       The way the woven strips create a polygonal solid has a striking similarity to computer generated line mesh images. Octopus Hairdo - version 2

      I chose to create another variation on the woman with octopus hair. I think this one has the potential to cause a delicious frisson in the viewer due to the surrealistic nature of it. On a simplistic level it relates to remix  culture in the sense that the objects were taken from a preexisting source of images designed to be used in this way, but its also a good example of requiring the viewer to stop, even if only briefly, to wonder exactly why these two images were combined in this way. There have been other human animal hybrids all throughout history, even a notable Disney villain who was half woman, half octopus, and my brief glance at google tells me that Laurana is a D&D character, so it turns out that there is an added dimension of meaning, specifically the appropriation of a pop culture figure for the purpose of creating an artistic piece/statement. I personally have never seen quite this exact idea, and I feel that my interest in it ...
